Homeowners looking to refurbish their houses but unwilling to use expensive credit cards to finance it will soon be served by a new, locally based loan company specializing in home improvement loans. American First Mortgage Source Inc. will open Feb. 1 at 504 W. Mission Ave., in Escondido. Jess Chinchillas, founder of the company, recently returned to the county after serving as vice president for The Money Store, a Sacramento-based home lender. The home improvement loan is secured by a lien on the subject property, he added. Since the average home improvement loan is smaller than other kinds of home equity loans, but has just as much paperwork, the points charged are usually proportionally higher, he added.
David Fields, marketing channel manager of Hickory Hardware of Nashville, TN, was elected vice president of the Home Improvement Research Institute.
The ABC network sitcom Home Improvement first aired on September 17 1991 and ran for eight seasons through May 1999. During only its second season the show was renewed for three additional seasons an unusual decision in the television industry. Based on the stand-up comedy routine of its star Tim Allen (born Timothy Allen Dick in 1953) Home Improvement initially reflected Allens love of power tools cars and Sears department stores as well as mirroring his own family situation. Allen portrayed Tim Taylor the host of cable TVs “Tool Time.” His wife Jill was portrayed by Patricia Richardson. More than just comedy though Home Improvement epitomized the concerns of the largest generation in history the baby boomers. The Taylors were a representation of the average American family of the 1990s and their struggles although treated with light-hearted humor reflected the struggles of the shows demographic. In the main three fundamental concerns of the boomer generation were examined on a weekly basis–relationships family and the search for spirituality.

Some statistics suggest more than 30 million cell phones will be retired in the U.S. this year. Through the FundingFactorys Cell Phone Recycling Program, schools can exchange cell phones donated by family and friends for school equipment and supplies.
I think cell phones should be allowed in schools. There might be an emergency, or parents might need to get hold of their child. Taylorsville
A new study funded by Motorola Corp. suggests that cell phones do not pose a cancer disk, reports Promotive Communications Inc. However, experts say its too soon to rule out a negative health impact of cell phones. A 13-nation study on the relationship between cell phones and brain tumors is under way. The results are expected to be released in 2004.

FREMONT, Calif. — A new wristwatch-based heart monitor allows people on the go to keep close tabs on their heart rates without interrupting their routines. All the user needs to do is place two fingers on the sensors that are comfortably located on the watchs sporty case, and in a matter of seconds the EKG results are given to the user.
WILMINGTON, Del. — Textronics, Inc. has developed a new transmitter for use with the stretchy fabric electrode sensors that are knit into the companys NuMetrex[R] brand of heart rate monitor fitness apparel. By replacing the conventional hard plastic electrodes with soft, flexible textile sensors that are knit directly into the fabric of our clothing, we are able to offer the most comfortable heart rate monitors on the market, says Textronics CEO Stacey Burr. Now, with the development of our own transmitter, we can also provide improved accuracy and compatibility with many different brands of watches. This makes our comfortable solution accessible to more people. The NuMetrex transmitter is built using technology that was designed specifically to meet performance needs created in a textile environment.

“Saline breast implants have been the workhorse of breast augmentation
because there are many different saline profiles and shapes available,
which allows your doctor to achieve a better match to your individual body

Saline breast implants also have a flexible fill volume, and are not
prefilled. This provides more options for incision placement, as well as a
smaller incision necessary for the breast

insertion, their final volume can be adjusted making it easier for the
surgeon to correct for existing breast asymmetry.

“Saline breast implants are great for women who need correction for

Dr. Kotoske. “Each patient is different however, and you should always

Spurred by the success of the first volume in its Encyclopaedia of Sports Medicine, the International Olympic Committee has initiated a second series of publications to address specific sports activities. This series is aimed at coaches, team doctors, athletic trainers, physical therapists, and other health-related professionals with academic preparation in the basic sciences. This book, written by three American authorities on the application of science and sports medicine to swimming, is the first in the series. The first two sections of the book provide an excellent introduction to basic concepts in physiology and biomechanics of importance in swimming. They are logically organized, skillfully presented, and for the most part, well-illustrated. The presentation of complex scientific information in a form that is not only acceptable but attractive to practitioners is fraught with an inevitable tension between simplicity and accuracy. Each attempt to describe a complex process in simple terms is accompanied by a shedding of qualifiers that, if carried too far, threatens the accuracy of the information being presented. The authors have been uncommonly skillful in meeting the challenge inherent in this aspect of their task. A further challenge in presenting such material is to maintain an appropriate balance between theory (or science) and practice. The authors have managed to do this in admirable style, with the practical significance of the theory illustrated convincingly. The remainder of the second section is devoted to a discussion of the techniques used in the four competitive strokes. These are essentially an updated condensation of the corresponding sections of Maglischos popular text, Swimming Faster (Mayfield Publishing Co., 1982), replete with photo sequences, line drawings, and occasional discussions of related research. Although mostly descriptive, these chapters also contain helpful observations on contentious issues and useful insights gleaned from the authors experiences as a college coach. Unfortunately, the photo sequences are no match for the quality of the text. The photography is uneven, with some sequences sharp and contrasting and others out of focus, blurred, and lacking contrast. In addition, the sense of movement that a good photo sequence can convey when laid out appropriately–that is, running from left to right across adjoining pages–is lost when the photos are stacked vertically in a left-right, left-right fashion.
Youngsters are being encouraged to take up swimming this summer. The Temple Park Centre and Hebburn Swimming Pool, in South Tyneside, is offering a discount rate to young children. Under 16s can swim for 50p every Saturday and Sunday until the end of July.
The pool was such a hit that from the day it was opened the town has been buoyed up on a wave of civic pride. Not since the alcoholic dwarf and his convicted paedophile father were bludgeoned to death, mutilated and set on fire by a group of unemployed teenagers have the local townspeople been as collectively exhilarated. Phrases like community spirit and our childrens future are still peppering the letters page of the local paper. Property prices have risen slightly. An ecumenical church service of thanksgiving is being planned. And people of all ages are learning how wonderful it is to be able to swim. Naturally enough, in a rural area such as this, there are people who have had little or no previous experience of either indoor swimming pools or unisex changing rooms. On the very first day, a 57-year-old farm labourer was cautioned by police for allegedly exposing himself in a cubicle. And an unclaimed pair of wellingtons and a decomposing ferret were discovered in a locker after a persistent smell was traced to its source. In the pool itself a 25-year-old supermarket manager sustained a nasty head injury after taking a running dive into the shallow end. When the pool was divided into lanes to cater for the serious swimmers, problems also occurred when new swimmers presumed an entitlement to one lane each on a first-come-first-served basis. I myself was reprimanded and then lightly assaulted by an elderly lady who believed that, by swimming in a lane that was already occupied by her, I had taken a serious liberty. But theres nothing that a few extra signs in the changing room and at the poolside wont sort out.

Proposed Legislation Would Expand the Chiropractic Benefit Worldwide Dynamic Chiropractic examines House Resolutions 5122 and 5202, two important pieces of legislation that would significantly impact the provision of chiropractic services to U.S. military personnel and veterans around the world. Providing chiropractic benefits to the nations veterans has been a goal of the chiropractic profession for decades. B.J. Palmer first promulgated the idea of making chiropractic a health benefit for veterans as early as 1937, and even succeeded in having a bill introduced in Congress that would have given veterans access to chiropractic services. While Dr. Palmers original efforts were unsuccessful, the profession finally reached its goal in January 2002, when President George W. Bush signed into law the Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care Programs Enhancement Act, which established a permanent chiropractic benefit within the Veterans Affairs health care system.
A Lack of Trust or a Lack of Honor? The Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA) situation (please see “Chiropractic Unity Betrayed?” on the front page of this issue) brings several issues to light about the ability of our chiropractic organizations to work together, trust is one of those issues. While the answer is obvious (a lack of trust), it underscores the basic deficit that is holding the chiropractic profession down politically. The ACC didnt feel comfortable taking their “word” for it. The ACC wanted it in writing, but even that failed.
CONVENTIONAL 0R ALTERNATIVE HEALING? When back pain occurs, most people first think of a chiropractor. Chiropractic manipulation and massage are the most commonly used forms of care for back pain. [10] Each year, 20 million Americans (about one out of 13) use chiropractic services, most often for back pain. Back pain is the second most common reason expressed by patients for office visits to primary care physicians and the most common reason for office visits to orthopedic surgeons, neurosurgeons, and occupational medicine physicians. [4] Estimates of total direct and indirect costs attributable to back pain are as high as $60 billion annually in the United states. [23] In 1988, the cost of medical care for back pain was estimated to be $8 billion annually, with chiropractic care costing approximately $2.4 billion (paid by 5% of the population). [22] In 1993, it was estimated that about 7% of adults in this country received chiropractic treatment in the past year. [10] Chiropractic is the second most widely used form of alternative health care. [17] While most people go to a chiropractor for treatment of back pain, some go for the wrong reasons. According to statistics offered by the American Chiropractic Association, 94% of chiropractic patients are treated for neuromusculoskeletal conditions, 38% of which is for back pain, 28% for neck pain, 14% for headache, 8% for problems with the extremities, and 6% for other neuromusculoskeletal conditions. The remaining 6% are treated for viscerosomatic conditions, such as asthma, gastrointestinal disorders, and hypertension. [13]

THE EDUCATION OF A GRAPHIC DESIGNER by Steven Heller (ed.) “Gone are the days when someone (like me, for instance) stumbled into the field, learned totally by doing, and got a great job almost by accident,” explains Heller. “. at times graphic design education still seems like a crapshoot.” Without a solid education in graphic design and support from recognized designers, todays rising stars would lack the opportunities necessary to kick-start their careers. As Jeffrey Keedy notes, the main lesson is that we continue to involve ourselves in the discussion and evolution of the state of design and design education: “Graphic design is bigger than any one of us, so lets start acting like we believe it.”
ICONS OF GRAPHIC DESIGN by Steven Heller and Mirko Ilic The artists showcased in Icons of Graphic Design are a mix of the well-known-like Salvador DalĂ, Andy Warhol and Milton Glaser-and names you may never have heard of. Perhaps the most interesting-or surprising-element of the book lies in the recurrent themes that often date back farther than you would think. In fact, some of the older designs included here look as if they could have easily existed in a later time. Some are strikingly modern. There are 967 illustrations within this books pages-764 of them in color. All may not be artistic masterpieces, but the works displayed here constitute a cultural record of the times in which they were conceived, and certainly provide a unique look at the evolution of design.

ADVERTISING MEDIAAUDIORadio stations feature many different programming emphases. These range from music-oriented formats such as country, adult contemporary, classic rock, and alternative rock to news-or talk-oriented formats. Since these different formats attract different demographic segments of the total audience, business owners can take appreciable measures to reach their target audience simply by buying time on appropriate stations. Another major advantage of radio advertising is that it is inexpensive to place and to produce, allowing small business owners to place advertisements on more than one station in a given market. In addition, radio advertising content can be changed quickly to meet changes in the market or to reflect new business objectives. Finally, radio reaches large numbers of commuters, income-generating people who often pay more attention to radio advertising than to other advertising media, especially if they are driving alone. The costs associated with purchasing radio advertising time reflect this emphasis on reaching the commuter audience. The four time slots, or dayparts, offered for advertisers by most radio stations are the morning drive, daytime, afternoon drive, and evening. The two most expensivebut also most effective advertising slotsare the morning and afternoon drive times.

Honeymoon in Hawaii
Ask an expert A Colorado Springs woman who decided to drive to Denver instead of flying the first leg of her trip to Chicago showed up at DIA only to find her entire trip had been canceled by the airline. How did this happen? Local travel agent Tim Lange gets asked questions like this all the time. Hes a member of the Rocky Mountain Chapter of the American Society of Travel Agents, and if he doesnt have an answer, hell find one.
The Traveler is the story of Mihaly, a young educated Hungarian who is desperately searching for a respectable bourgeois life-style. He had studied for a degree in the history of religions but eventually left the university without a degree in order to join the family business. He married Erzsi, hoping that marriage would help him settledown, not knowing that Erzsi had divorced her quite ordinary businessman husband because she wanted to escape from the boredom of bourgeois life. The couple are on their honeymoon, stopping first in Venice, then planning to proceed to Rome. On the way, however, Mihaly gets off the train for some fresh air at a small station, and when he tries to resume his journey (as if by subconscious design) he catches the wrong train, going in the opposite direction. This Coincidence triggers a flight into the unknown, a quest deeply rooted in his adolescent friendships and games. There is the double lure of androgynous love and sudden death; with the plot moving back and forth between Budapest, Paris, and Italy, some of the heroes depart for good, while others return home to live at last as grown-ups.The Traveler is a short but colorful and entertaining novel, influenced more by Cocteau and Gide than by contemporary English writing (although Szerb was one of the early admirers of Aldous Huxley). One slightly irritating feature of the book is the authors eagerly displayed cleverness, which is reflected in most of the characters–they seem to think and speak with unusual empathy and clarity, save for Mihaly, whose role is to grope his way toward his hidden identity. This brightness (even when the character is not meant to be particularly bright) makes them look somehow one-dimensional.The novels American translator, Peter Hargitai, has written an interesting afterword in which he reveals some of the secrets of the novel–e.g., the real-life figures on whom some of the characters are modeled. His translation reads smoothly, but I am not convinced that he is always able to choose the right phrase when it comes to certain Hungarian expressions and idioms. A helyes kozeput a sznobizmus es ellensznobizmus kozt (a typical Szerb-like turn of phrase) is not the middle course between starchy airs and servility. A Karolyi-forradalom was definitely a revolution, not–as Hargitai puts it, for reasons unknown to me–a rebellion. Further on, a penzemmel nagyon ravasz a dolog is an impersonal statement and should not be translated as Im a sly fox when it comes to money. Lumpolunk is rather more extreme than just were going out, and in Szerbs texts the money-bags whom Erzsis friend Sari does not want to meet are said to be moche (ugly, disgusting), not just old. These examples (and one could add more) show that even a gifted translator such as Hargitai should check his text most carefully if his ambition is to render the original with as much accuracy as possible.

Medical bills. We dread seeing them, we often complain about them and we really dont want to pay them out of our own pocket. For years, we counted on insurance paying our medical bills. But with changes in health care coverage today, we often pay a greater share of our medical bills, and were paying closer attention to them.”Insurance coverage is the No. 1 concern, more than the medical bill itself,” said Colette Lasack, director of patient business services at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, which has 1.4 million patient clinic visits and 75,000 hospital registrations each year.
WASHINGTON — Dietary supplement and over-the-counter medications would have a new mandatory reporting system for any illnesses, death or other problems associated with their products, based on a bill introduced Wednesday by Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, and Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill. Under the bill, manufacturers, packers or distributors of over- the-counter drugs or dietary supplements would need to file a report to the FDA within 15 days of any reported incident of an adverse health effect specified in the bill such as death, inpatient hospitalization, birth defects and several others. They would also have to keep records for six years of any reported health problem, even if it is not under a “serious” one listed in the legislation. “This is an important public health initiative, which at the same time safeguards access to dietary supplements and over-the-counter drugs,” Hatch said.

FOR THE uninitiated, medical and health insurance is a relatively new class of insurance in Malaysia compared to motor, fire or personal accident insurance. A lot has been written about it, but there continues to be confusion over what health insurance really is.
Part II, explanatory economics, represents the bulk of the book. The economics of demand, price elasticity, risk aversion, and the effect of insurance on the demand for medical services are explained clearly and well. Behavior of suppliers in the medical care market is reviewed, with attention given to differences in for-profit and not-for-profit organizations. A solid explanation of competitive markets allows discussion of timely issues such as the limits of applicability of the competitive model to the medical care market, price and nonprice competition, and market power of providers, purchasers, and patients. Outside readings on current managed competition proposals would augment the textbook discussion well.A short section on the economic effects of information asymmetries in the medical care and health insurance market introduces the concepts of supplier induced demand and adverse selection. Both discussions are short, but the portion on adverse selection especially needs expansion. More rigor, explanatory graphs, and a more extensive bibliography would make the adverse selection concept more useful. This topic is critical to a sound understanding of the functioning of medical expense insurance. The final section deals with value judgments and evaluative economics. The nontechnical explanation of efficiency versus fairness criteria for evaluating medical care policy is somewhat cursory. More technical material is needed to improve the precision of this discussion. However, even without any additions, the text provides a general background on issues of access to medical care, affordability, and quality of care. The difficulty of making allocation decisions given scarce resources is clearly laid out and opens the way for a discussion of policy alternatives.

The American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology 2002;187(3), Part 2, focuses on how and why womens health and gender-based competencies should be woven into the fabric of undergraduate medical education. It discusses appropriate components of the health and medical curriculum, and combining health care competencies with educational objectives and models for teaching reproductive health.
Editors note: This article is adapted from Menke and Bobbins Integrative Chiropractic, scheduled for release in 2007 by Elsevier Health Sciences. “The medicalization of early diagnosis not only hampers and discourages preventative health care, but it also trains the patient-to-be to function in the meantime as an acolyte to his doctor. He learns to depend on the physician in sickness and in health. He turns into a lifelong patient.” “Medicalizing” is forcing conditions into familiar diagnostic categories for medical management.1 Every complaint has an antidote, whether it needs one or not. ; Treating natural consequences of living as diseases that must be vanquished, leads to too much treatment and too much dependence on the authoritative “professional.” We tend to grant most, if not all of our decision-making authority to an expert in highly complex technologies. In the case of medicine, this often complicates the commonplace condition and prolongs selflimiting ones. Today, diseases and drugs are way oversold.

The UK market for digital CCTV video recorders was virtually non-existent before 1996, when smaller capacity HDDs and high costs made digital recording unattractive when compared with relatively low cost, good quality S-VHS analogue equipment. However, as technological developments have led to significant increases in capacity and picture quality, and costs have become more competitive, the market has increased in value. Ever since analogue CCTV systems first appeared in the early 1970s, recorded images have provided vital evidence in many high profile court cases. CCTV images have given police vital clues in what otherwise might have been unsolvable cases, and have allowed members of the public to assist police in identifying suspects.

Plastic surgery is usually performed to treat birth defects and to remove skin blemishes such as warts, acne scars, or birthmarks. Cosmetic surgery procedures are performed to make persons look younger or enhance their appearance in other ways. Reconstructive surgery is used to reattach body parts severed in combat or accidents, to perform skin grafts after severe burns, or to reconstruct parts of persons body that were missing at birth or removed by surgery. Reconstructive surgery is the oldest form of plastic surgery, having developed out of the need to treat wounded soldiers in wartime.

Symposium: Theoretical Basis and Effectiveness
Despite an industry upheaval and two gravely ill sons, this health-care entrepreneur discovered the prescription for perseverance. Sadly, looming business woes were the least of the Langdons worries that year. In the summer of 1996, at age three, their son Spencer–twin brother of Tyler–was diagnosed with leukemia, warranting three years of chemotherapy and approximately $1,000 worth of medication each month. Faced with circumstances that would obliterate the future goals of most, the Langdons didnt fold, but instead expanded ATPs services to override the Medicare massacre. Making ATP a onestop shop by adding outpatient rehab to its services was the ultimate goal, but first the Langdons had to move the company out of their Carrboro, North Carolina, home (situated in a bedroom, no less) and into a Hillsborough, North Carolina, office complex. To Ted, outpatient was ATPs salvation. I really started seeing the effects [of the Balanced Budget Act] in 1997, says Ted, 33. Medicare-based agencies were laying off staff, and the first people to go were with contract companies. If they didnt go Out of business or merge with other corporations, agencies drastically reduced their pay rates to contract companies, lowering the therapists wages. Some just didnt pay at all–like House Calls, a statewide home-health agency in North Carolina whose owner was nabbed for allegedly double-billing his way to Medicare/Medicaid fraud in 1997. I tried everything I could to retrieve [the $14,000 House Calls owed], but they were sued by everyone, says Ted. They had everything frozen, and I wa s so far down on the lawsuit list that, basically, I never got paid.

A NEW, ALL-NATURAL AND medically used supplement shows promise in helping many individuals to reduce body fat, tone their bodies, enhance their skin and appearance, increase daytime energy levels, improve joint function and sleep better–but can it possibly be true? Collagen protein, taken internally as a dietary supplement, is quickly becoming one of the hottest nutritional supplements available today. Experts who have studied the benefits and well-documented medical history of collagen protein say yes–this newly available supplement can help many of these bodily and appearance enhancing results. Collagen protein (hydrolyzed), created and patented by an American pharmacist in the early 1970s, has been used by doctors, clinics and hospitals for weight loss; various skin conditions, including treatment for burn victims; nutritional support for the elderly and hospital patients; wound healing; and for the support of joints and connective tissue. With its well-documented and clinically proven history, collagen protein has only recently become commercially available to the public.

The aging of America and a trend toward self-medication have perked up sales of vitamins and nutritional supplements, photonutrients, herbs, minerals and homeopathetic remedies. Among the most popular is melatonin, a hormone that has been found to be a natural sleep aid. Also slated for healthy margins: Ginkgo Biloba, an herb that reportedly enhances memory and mental clarity; cold treatment products like Ester C (a patented form of vitamin C); and Echinacea and Pycnogenol, the registered trademarks for an antioxidant.Nutritional supplement kits have also become popular, with The Weider Nutrition Group rolling out its PrimeTime Mens Health System. The program includes three one-a-day formulations for morning, noon and evening for men age 40 and older. It focuses on weight control, increased energy and mental awareness, enhanced virility and aid in prostate care.Analgesics posted the largest percentage of sales, almost 1%, at discounters, due primarily to the popularity of longer-lasting versions of many of todays most popular pain relievers. New players like Aleve have an eight-to-12-hour dosing regimen, as do other newcomers like Orudis KT from Whitehall Robins and Actron from Bayer Consumer Care. The Food and Drug Administration approved a record nine Rx-to-OTC switches last year: Pepcid AC, Tagamet HB, Childrens Motrin, Orudis KT, Actron, Nicorette, Rogaine, Femstat 3, Zactac 75 and Axid, the newest acid controller. Acid control products created a new segment of the antacid category, and are projected to surpass sales of traditional antacids like Tums and Rolaids over the next few years.

Connecticut Valley Furniture by Eliphalet Chapin and His Contemporaries, 1750-1800 By Thomas P. and Alice K. Kugelman with Robert Lionetti
Leasing The Good Life From the outside, Antique Contemporary Leasings brick warehouse on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C., offers few clues to the nature of the business. Its only distinguishing features are its bright-red double doors and the finely carved and finished sign directly above them. This is, in short, not your typical rental-furniture outlet. Antique Contemporary Leasing is, rather, what Leezee Porter, its founder and owner, calls the first upscale rental-furniture company in the country. Its targeted customers are diplomats, corporate executives, government officials, and developers building and showing expensive houses. Many of those people expect to spend only a brief time in Washington before their career take them elsewhere, and, Porter says, her company tries to “create a comfortable environment” for “someone who wants to live a transient life that doesnt seem so transient.”
During his life, R.M. Schindler (1887–1953) garnered precious little praise from hard-line International Style contemporaries or the press, but in the past three decades his aesthetic–a fusion of the reductivism of Adolf Loos and the planarity of Frank Lloyd Wright–has been celebrated as the exemplar of High Left Coast Modernism. The largest Schindler show ever will include 110 drawings, fifteen models, and a selection of furniture designs, charting the architects career from his early years in Vienna through his apprenticeship with Wright and on to the California houses of the 20s, 30s, and 40s. The business of commercial real estate continues to work its way through the challenges created by the Tax Reform Act of 1986.Today investors are primarily in two categories; owner-occupied or investment companies that are trying to seize the opportunities in this real estate cycle where the spread between cost of funds and anticipated returns are at an all-time high.Real Estate Investment Trusts, or REITS, can now buy properties with good credit tenant occupancy at capitalization rates around 11 percent with cost of funds remaining near 4 percent. This 7 percent spread is not necessarily available for the typical real estate investor, but such investments will provide a stimulus for other investment funds.

Real estate practice is a broad and widely defined area of the law. In a pristine sense it deals with the esoteric subject of real property law and titles. In practice the subject matter handled by real property lawyers is much broader. Many of the areas of law within real estate practice are areas of specialty themselves. Real estate lawyers examine and evaluate real property titles, handle real estate sales, purchases and other transactions, foreclose mortgages, represent developers and contractors in drafting and negotiating development and construction agreements, handle real estate financing, structure and draft the governing documents for planned developments such as condominiums, serve as counsel to community and condominium associations, draft and negotiate leases, litigate title, boundary, and other land disputes, and advise clients respecting zoning and land: use matters. The examination of real estate titles requires knowledge of corporations and other forms of business organization, wills, trusts and estates, and a practitioner handling transactions must understand contractual, business, and tax subjects as well. The subjects that are tested on the certification exam attest to this diversity. They are title issues; real estate finance; environmental and land use; condominiums and homeowner associations; landlord tenant; closings; sellers, buyers, brokers, and title insurers; real property litigation; taxation of entities and other tax issues; and ethics. Some hold an impression that at least some aspects of the real estate practice are not challenging, that the practice is increasingly title company, form, and paralegal driven, and that when business is light any lawyer with a good paralegal can Ado real estate closings. This impression is not accurate. As with any area of practice, successfully representing clients in real estate matters requires knowledge, skill, and experience. The diversity in real estate practice may mean that no one lawyer can be an expert in each practice area encompassing the modern real property practice or that are tested by the certification program. That, however, is not a reason to not seek certification. The committee recognizes that few lawyers are likely to possess specific and detailed expertise in each of the many subjects that fall within the scope of real estate.

The analyses and applications vary in perspicacity. Hamlet as a study in the evolution of law is a persuasive angle, although the portrait of Hamlet as a melancholic law student is not. Othello as a litigant in a slander suit against Iago seems reductive. The idea that Nick Bottom is a prototypical Jeffersonian idealist, a harbinger of egalitarian democracy, and that A Midsummer Nights Dream is a persuasive example of an activist theory of legal interpretation, is both instructive and delightful. Not surprisingly, Measure for Measure and The Merchant of Venice are key texts, both for illustrating Shakespeares complex treatment of law and justice, and for engaging students in legal debate. I think the chapter on Merchant is the best because it subjects Portia to vituperative cross examination, suggesting a number of ways she could have defended Antonio without punishing Shylock so cruelly. The discussion insightfully reopens the plays painful legal and ethnic issues. In addition to the plays mentioned, Kornstein discusses Julius Caesar, Henry IV, Richard III, Much Ado About Nothing, The Winters Tale, Richard II, and King Lear. The organization is by legal issue rather than by chronology. He speculates about how Shakespeare came to be so preoccupied with law but concludes that Shakespeare probably was not a scrivener during his so-called lost years. Kornstein eschews jargon and ideology (although his own liberalism is apparent), and so his book never gets abstract. Conversely, it doesnt engage theoretical-political issues in Shakespeares treatment of power or in literatures place in law studies. Kornsteins style is always lucid and often witty. The bibliography is very useful, especially for references to Shakespeare in law journals.RICHARD BRUCHER University of Maine, Orono
BERKELEY, Calif. — Within the rebellious corporate culture of Nolo Press, the publisher of do-it-yourself legal guides, scorn is a business tool mightier than any conventional marketing strategy. The airy clockworks factory that houses the Berkeley company is decorated with fashionable “legal briefs,” baggy boxer shorts emblazoned with briefcase-toting sharks, and toasters declaring the defiant company motto: “Dont feed the lawyers. Just say Nolo.” For 27 years, Nolo has thrived on unrestrained hostility to pettifoggers. The desks of some Nolo executives contain treats of shark-shaped gummy lawyers, and the companys award-winning Web site features a running list of lawyer jokes classified in 20 categories ranging from “Outrageous Fees” to “Lawyers as Crooks, Cheats and Felons.”

Integrated digital TVs incorporate a receiver/decoder inside the television cabinet, rather than as a separate set-top box. The first company to sign a collaboration agreement is Korean electronic giant LG which will integrate Paces pay TV technology into wide screen digital TV sets due out in time for Christmas 1998. Pace says that it is in advanced negotiations with Toshiba for the rapid supply of BSkyB set-top boxes and to develop BSkyB integrated digital TVs for launch in mid-1999. Last week, Pace won an order from Cable Wireless Communications for 100,000 digital cable set-top boxes. In a separate move, Pace says it is developing an internet-enabled set-top box for launch by the end of 1998. It claims to be the first vendor to apply for approval from BABT, the UK telecommunications equipment standards authority, to integrate an analog modem in its TV set-top boxes. BABT has just applied the new CTR21 European standard for analog modems to satellite TV set-top boxes. This means that it will be able to award pan-European approval to UK-based vendors integrating modems into their set-top boxes, freeing them from the need to gain country-by-country approval.
Having learned that lower wage rates alone are not enough to succeed in todays fiercely competitive global television market, Zenith has launched a corporate-wide restructuring program, including automating panel processing operations at its Mexican cabinet plant.Manufacturing a better product to sell for a lower price in the face of inflation and fierce international competition is a challenge that Zenith Electronics Corp., the last U.S.-owned manufacturer of TVs, has wrestled with for many years. Beginning in the early 1970s, the Glenview, Ill.-based consumer electronics giant began shifting some of its electronics manufacturing operations south of the border to lower labor content costs. In 1985, Zenith moved its wood console television manufacturing division from Evansville, Ind., to Juarez, Mexico.Recently, Zenith officials determined that the substantial gap in wages paid to workers in Mexico compared to those in the United States is not enough in itself to profitably compete in the worldwide television market. As a result, Zenith has embarked on a sweeping restructuring and reengineering program to boost its competitiveness, including updating manufacturing operations at its Juarez cabinet plant.
Two thoughtful approaches to a classic love-hate relationship Well situated in the kitchen, these television sets can be watched from adjacent living spaces, then disappear from view. One design makes use of an under-the-counter storage compartment in an island; the other takes advantage of a cabinet built into a wall. The TVs plug into sockets installed inside the cabinets.

Automotive module suppliers worldwide can now design complete remote keyless entry (RKE) systems inexpensively and in short cycle time, thanks to a new chip set from Motorola. The DigitalDNA system solution provides the hardware and software components needed for RKE applications with multiple iterations for maximum design flexibility. “This highly integrated solution offers designers the flexibility to add features to their system while developing extremely small modules,” said Denis Griot, corporate vice president and general manager of Motorola. “The trend is to put these systems directly on the head of the key, and being able to design around a microprocessor already embedded with RF allows our customers to do that.”
Lear Corporation and BERU Group said they have signed an agreement to jointly design and develop tire pressure monitoring systems for the global automotive market. Terms were not disclosed. Under this strategic partnership, the two companies said they will develop systems that will relay information to drivers through the electronic architecture used for the remote keyless entry system. This strategic partnership makes sense from a technological standpoint because both remote keyless entry systems and tire pressure monitoring systems currently operate on radio- frequency signals, says D. William Pumphrey, President of the Lear Electronics and Electrical Division. This partnership is especially important in North America because the recently amended United States Transportation Recall Enhancement Accountability and Documentation (TREAD) Act will require tire pressure warning systems on all new vehicles by 2003. So this is an excellent growth opportunity for both companies.

Early Cameras Have you ever looked at a photograph and wondered how it was made? The ancient Greeks were able to produce images in darkened rooms. They let light enter the room through a small hole in one wall. The image appeared upside down on the opposite wall. This was called a camera obscura. Artists used these images to make sketches. The word photography comes from the Greek words meaning to write or draw with light.

Title: Fundamentals of ChiropracticAuthors: Daniel Redwood, DC, and Carl S. Cleveland III, DC
A recent article in Dynamic Chiropractic (June 26, 2000, NE edition) titled “The Third Paradigm” by Reginald Gold, DC, PhC, discussed three different paradigms of chiropractic thinking within the chiropractic profession. His theories were insightful and suggested some important ramifications for the future of the chiropractic profession. These practitioners rely on scientific research and studies that suggest that chiropractic has therapeutic efficacy. They often quote studies that have shown that chiropractic care reduces time missed from work or that it is less expensive than traditional medical care. This is of particular interest to insurance companies, since they were designed precisely to pay for this type of care. Generally speaking, these types of cases require only temporary and occasional care. While insurance companies have begun to reimburse for some wellness care (e.g., smoking cessation programs or limited memberships at health clubs), actuarial studies indicate that most people will not utilize these services. Insurance companies, after all, are in the business of making money.

In spite of the fact that overall retail sales in Germany fell 2.2 percent in May 2006 (when compared with April 2006) furniture sales in Germany rose 7.4 percent in a similar comparison. The figures were reported by Bloomberg News on June 30, 2006. The strength shown by furniture sales in Germany appears to have been reported in the region generally. A separate Bloomberg News report, published on July 6, 2006, said that retail sales in the eurozone rose for the third straight month. An index of retail sales increased to 55.1 in June 2006, the second highest level since the index began in January 2004.

Sherman had the software program created so he could deliver a professionallooking inspection report.”If you see my writing,” he says, “youd know why I dont do handwritten reports.”Sherman entered the home-inspection business five years ago after an injury limited his ability to work in the home-building business. The inspection equipment includes a series of ladders, digital cameras, a computer, and a group of detectors that seek out carbon monoxide or other harmful gases inside a home.
The Apartment Association of La Crosse Area Inc. has unanimously passed an alternative to the proposed rental inspection/ licensing ordinance. The proposal calls for the inspection of “owner-occupied dwellings” - which includes single-family homes - as well as rentals.”To me there is a difference between what someone does in their home that they own and what a landlord does in a property (where) he is taking money to provide a place that is clean and safe,” said La Crosse Common Council member Charles Clemence, committee chairman. “If you make your own wine at home, thats one thing. If you make it for sale, there are other rules. If youre doing something as a business, thats different than doing for yourself.”
As part of a project to educate homeowners on making their homes more energy-efficient, one Oklahoma City couple volunteered their house for a thorough inspection Wednesday to determine how much energy it was wasting and what they can do about it. The Capital Goods industry has three sub industries: electrical equipment, heavy equipment and machinery manufacturers. The three capital goods market segments have similar valuations even though their end products are different Another factor effecting the valuation of heavy equipment and capital goods companies is interest cost The current rate of interest is favorable for this group. Also, long term interest rates are relativly low which makes it easier for corporations and farmers to finance heavy equipment expenditures. Companies, in the heavy equipment industry, that obtain a significant amount of their sales in foreign markets usually have a higher growth rate and therefore a higher valuation. The reason is, there is a worldwide built up demand for infrastructure improvements. Therefore companies doing business in the international market have a good source for long term profits.

The tension between theory and observation (ProQuest Information and Learning:. denotes formulae omitted.) Through the centuries, the art and science of building have evolved in a state of tension between two approaches to overcoming the physical world: the use of (1) theory; and (2) unquestioning reliance on observation. To develop a new code or improve an existing one, it is helpful to appreciate this tension.
As farmers grow more corn and fewer soybeans, planning for additional storage is becoming a summer ritual across the Corn Belt. Last summer, Doug Mills and his family weighed the alternatives. Doug farms with his father, Morris, brother Gordon, cousin Andy and uncle Murray in Crawfordsville, Ind. Whats your farms situation? “We are growing a 3-1 ratio of corn to soybeans,” Mills says. “Our crop mix in the future will depend on profitability.” Located about 11 miles from two ethanol plants and an elevator that ships grain to southeastern hog and poultry producers, corn is likely to remain the familys most profitable crop. The Mills family decided their storage facilities were not enough. “For the last two years, we wound up storing 40,000 bu. or 50,000 bu. of corn in a 100×200 shed,” he says. “So, our equipment had to sit outside. But, all we received in return for doing that was an improved basis. Besides having no place to work on our equipment, we couldnt hold our grain long enough to capture the market gain from fall through spring.”
Byline: PERRY D. DRAKE For catalogers and other direct marketers of relatively high-priced products and services, the pay-offs to be yielded from a marketing database are often a no-brainer. Given the nature of the business, its not surprising that many publishers continue to operate their businesses from a fulfillment file. And this is fine - for some. However, as advertising uncertainties and mounting circulation costs put growing pressure on publishers to make existing revenue streams more profitable and develop new revenue streams, some are revisiting the marketing database concept, or seriously considering it for the first time.
