Business Editors/Real Estate Writers New Portfolio Includes Nine Institutional-quality Properties
The new fund, Schuster Realty Partners, will focus on creating exceptional returns (ROI) for investors while adhering to founder and CEO Mark Schusters principles and vision, which are rooted in a commitment to environmentally green, sustainable development and community revitalization. Since the firms creation in 1989, The Schuster Group has generated an impressive list of real estate projects that have enhanced communities while delivering strong returns (ROI) for investors. These include Mosler Lofts, downtown Seattles first green condominium, which is on target to be Seattles first LEED[R] Silver-certified condominium tower; Normandy Park Towne Center, an environmentally savvy shopping center; and Holmes Harbor Golf and Beach Club, which will include Built Green[TM] Certified homes. According to Mark Schuster, Weve managed to build a reputation of trust which has inspired investors, while serving as a catalyst for re-developing neighborhoods and creating positive change.
Craig Hill, Vice-President and Managing Director of the Grubb Ellis Seattle office, said, The real estate market in our region has historically been very resilient to ups and downs experienced by almost every other region in the country. The Northwest hasnt done that by sitting on its hands. One of the biggest ways weve innovated is through the use of technology. For us, the Internet-based LFC Online auction program was a natural progression because its basically a marriage between conventional brokerage services, advertising and technology. When deciding the method of marketing and sale for our 35+/- acre mixed use property, we wanted a program that would attract local, national and international buyers who would be interested in purchasing a property of this quality. The LFC Online program seemed like a perfect vehicle to get the job done. Bill Lange, President of the LFC Group of Companies which manages the LFC Online program, states, I see this property as the ideal Internet auction candidate because of its value and potential broad market appeal to both developers and investors. Our program will bring qualified buyers to the table, and in doing so, will create a win-win for both the buyers and our client, the seller.

INVESTMENT advisers say the best returns for the year are likely to come from the property market. And real estate investment trusts (REITs), which offer dividends from rental income derived from buildings invested in or owned, should become a very interesting investment option.

Dental implants are setting the stage for expanded treatment options. Experts who watch the implant market say it is poised for major growth, expected to double in the next ten years. Dental assistants will find that the ability to assist both the dentist and the patient a rewarding experience. Dental implants as an area of expertise will lead you to challenge your clinical skills as well as broaden your responsibilities in the practice by becoming an implant coordinator. An implant coordinator is utilized within a periodontal setting as well as the restorative practice. Together you and your dental assisting colleagues play a maior role in how smoothly a patient proceeds through the process.
For decades, dental implants have offered an alternative to dentures and dental bridges, giving people replacement teeth that look natural. But placing the implants can be a complicated, expensive, and lengthy process of trial and error for dentists. Julian Osorio, a Boston prosthodontist who founded Atlantis Components in 1996, is the creator of a process that makes implants available to mainstream dentistry. For the process, Osorio uses a digital duplication technology that makes it possible to take output from 3-D scanners and then digitally duplicate the shape, textures, and color of real teeth. The duplication technology is called Geomagic Studio from Raindrop Geomagic of Morrisville, N.C. Models created with the technology can be output directly into CAD software or to computer-numerically controlled manufacturing systems. Or, they can be automatically transformed to highly detailed but very small models that can be displayed on the web. The cast allows Atlantis employees to make sure their implants will fit the patients mouth perfectly. They can test for fit within the digitally duplicated mouth, before creating the implant.
Zarb G, Lekholm U, Albrektsson T, Tenenbaum H Quintessence Publishing Carol Stream, Illinois 2002 260 pages; illustrated; indexed; softcover ISBN: 0867154071 $78.00 Throughout the introduction, the authors stress the need for an evidence-based approach when prescribing implant therapy. An important discussion of the basic healing response and patient-mediated concerns is also included. The science is presented clearly and fully with recent references cited. The second section covers the oral surgery experience. This portion is particularly useful to dental hygienists in general practice who are not informed about the methods used for implant surgery. Outcome factors and criteria for chronic diseases, osteoporosis, and smoking are discussed at length. The authors fully understand that the final causal relationship of periodontal bone toss and osteoporosis, in which both are related to osteopenia, is not completely understood at this time, but they do cite the latest research on the topic.

Although cabinetry will always be cost necessary in kitchens, builders are seeing increased demand for cabinetry installed throughout homes. Offering other-room cabinetry as an upgrade provides storage and increased value for homeowners, while giving builders a competitive advantage and dealers an opportunity to increase cabinet sales. Outside of the kitchen and bath, the most popular room in the home for built-in cabinetry is the home office. The number of people who telecommute is affecting the upsurge in home offices. Home offices are becoming a standard offering from builders; says Connie Edwards, director of design for Timberlake Cabinets (circle 102). Other popular rooms include laundries, butlers pantries, hobby rooms, and mudrooms, says Kim Dunn, marketing publications specialist for Wellborn Cabinets (circle 103). Entertainment/media rooms, home libraries, and window-seat and fireplace-surround configurations also are in demand.
The kitchen is the hub of family life. Heres how to make a great one. Designing a kitchen can overwhelm even the most seasoned home experts. Unlike other rooms in the house, which have essentially four walls, a ceiling, and a floor, the kitchen has cabinets, appliances, countertops, sinks, and many other elements. Cyndy showed us snapshots of her projects, and one jumped right out. It features traditional and contemporary elements, stained and painted cabinets, a great mix of materials, and savvy storage ideas-all to wonderful effect. Heres how Cyndy worked with homeowners Ginger and Charles Clark to create their winning kitchen.
“We chose OurHouse.com because they are ahead of the game,” said Kitchen Tune-Up senior vp Jeff Dorn. “They already have the marketing muscle to drive consumers to their site. The more site traffic that occurs, the more prospective customers Kitchen Tune-up is placed in front of.”

A house in Hampstead that has hidden its north London origins behind a new Japanese personality, has just come on the market. Two adjoining houses in Fitzjohns Avenue were replanned and redesigned with specially selected materials. A stream runs along the full length of the properties (which are reached by means of a slatted bridge) and a sunken Japanese garden is filled with pebbles, ferns and bamboo. One of the houses only is for sale at an asking price of pounds 435,000 through Goldschmidt Howland (0171-435 4404). The main bedroom has a low-level custom-made Japanese platform bed and sliding shoji cupboards made from yellow rice paper. Housebuilders have just had their busiest month for two years and the prospects look good, according to the latest report for the House Builders Federation. New homes have increased their market share to almost 13 per cent from the 10 per cent at which they had been stuck since 1988. John Stewart, an independent housing economist and author of the report, says they are managing to fill a gap in the market because of sensitive prices and attractive marketing. “When I did some research with the Halifax we found a lack of confidence among intending homebuyers: they were not sure they would be able to sell their present homes. In buying a new home the hassle-free factor is very important,” he said. This bears out evidence from builders such as Barratt of a new breed of buyer at the top end of the market who, frustrated by the lack of good property available, is turning to developers for the first time. The success of Barratts award-winning development, Lakeside Grange, in Weybridge, Surrey, looks like being matched by its latest enterprise on the River Thames at Chiswick. At the recent opening of Royal Thames Crescent, all but three of the 19 five-bedroom houses and 13 two-bedroom apartments, with prices ranging up to pounds 600,000, have been sold.

Exercise and Cancers: Research Opportunities for Health-Related Fitness ScientistsRepresentatives from the American Cancer Society (ACS), the National Cancer Institute (NCI), and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) will challenge AAHPERD members to contribute to cancer prevention and control, describing the most promising research opportunities and resources to support investigation of the relationships between cancers and exercise. The presentation will be based on a synoptic article being developed by the ACS and the Office for Health Promotion of Northern Illinois University. Ruth Corcoran of ACS will describe a proposed collaborative research agenda, suggesting that two sets of consensually developed guidelines are needed to promote such research: one set to facilitate dissemination of what experts already know to the public and providers (including exercise specialists); and a second set to facilitate further collaborative research. Speakers from CDC and NCI will outline what is known about these topics, and how exercise scientists can contribute to further development (see accompanying abstracts). Presenters will recommend a process to develop research priorities, involving cancer experts, public health scientists, and relevant interest groups in AAHPERD. More than Meets the Eye Risk managers dont have to satisfy a formal education requirement to get their jobs, but they still ought to be conversant with the content of insurance contracts. That familiarity, however, has a downside because it can be the source of a false sense of security. When they talk about appraisal under the terms of a property policy, textbooks, instructional materials and, instructors have, always had a tendency to presume that the parties have resolved all coverage issues before they resort to appraisal. Thats probably the effect of common sense lurking in the subconscious and exerting a powerful influence over what gets written or spoken. An appraisal is an expensive proposition and each party has to bear a share of the cost. Because the appraiser cant consider coverage issues, the thing to do is resolve them before incurring the expense of an appraisal. Thats just common sense.
Also included in the policy is coverage for equipment breakdown and earthquake and sprinkler leakage at full limits.

Construction and Home Rehabilitation Company41312 46th St. Indianapolis, IN 46201
Colorado Springs-area home construction continued its blistering pace in the first quarter, although one economist fears an oversupply could drive down prices in the next few years. Single-family home building permits totaled 1,392 from January through March — a 20.2 percent jump from the same period last year, according to figures released Friday by the Pikes Peak Regional Building Department. The number of permits this year puts Colorado Springs and El Paso County on pace to shatter the record of 5,059 single-family permits, set only last year.

Were always looking 10 years into the future and attempting to get there in five years. The two essential keys to this are effective communications and employee education. The benefits of having a building connected directly with its management firm go beyond management issues, however. With each building wired into our database, serving both Colliers ABR and Colliers International and its more than 190 offices worldwide, every building can be queried by any of our Colliers partners to determine availabilities. This has an added advantage if we are the leasing agents for the building, where we can provide space listings instantaneously.Computerized maintenance programs in office buildings are another trend that have been in the marketplace for several years and continue to grow in strength. These programs provide the ability to schedule and generate work orders, manage preventive maintenance tasks, track all equipment histories, organize and track inventories, manage purchasing functions, maintain complete confidential labor records, and allocate resources. Dynamic data is tracked by the system, thereby projecting equipment failure before it happens. A problem can be fixed before it occurs, avoiding costly downtime. Ideally, this program can be linked to a headquarters operation which can then manage all the building systems.

In a personal injury action, defendant sought a partial summary judgment in Fellenz v. Luedtke Engineering Co. U.S. Magistrate Judge Jonathan W. Feldman denied the motion due to the fact that New York case law is not clear on applying Labor Law Section 241(6) to the type of work plaintiff was doing, nor is it clear that the observable danger would absolve defendant from liability under Section 200 of the Labor Law.Plaintiff Fellenz was employed by the Army Corps as the projects construction inspector and representative. His duties included observing the progress of the work, insuring that the break wall construction met specifications, completing quality assurance reports and plotting drawings. Fellenz was present on the construction site daily from June 1996 through May 1997.

SECURITY: Hossein Eslambolchi, ATTs CTO and president of ATT Research Labs, is a big believer in packet networks, but warns that network security these days is so pitiful that a hacker today could bring down the entire Internet with 100 lines of code. Its almost impossible to scale by putting all the security at the end of the network. It just doesnt work, Eslambolchi said at last months Interop conference in Las Vegas, according to Light Reading. We need to go somewhere in between. an intelligent network with smart devices.
Increasing concerns over homeland security issues have put ever-higher levels of pressure on state governments that are often too beleaguered and too cash-strapped to have any hope of keeping up with security suggestions and initiatives from the feds. “New Hampshire is unique compared to a lot of states. There is a lot of security and high-tech expertise, particularly in Nashua, Manchester and Portsmouth,” Steinberg notes. “In addition, were a small state where people and companies are closely connected. Its the small boat versus the ocean liner theory. Were small enough to move quickly and take on a wide range of security issues, from power systems to healthcare records, throughout the state. We could become one of the examples that other, larger states look to when they are doing their own security initiatives.” Steinberg knew it would take an organized group effort to address the security needs of the state, as well as the help and backing of a major organization, as technology security and cybersecurity werent his only concerns. An effort to improve statewide security and meet homeland security needs will require coordination of security guard providers and perimeter fence manufacturers, too, among many others, he stresses.

Introduction This article, the first in a series of four on granite working, deals with granite as a material, an industry, and a product and begins the description of the granite quarrying process. The second article will complete the account of granite quarrying. The final two articles concern the process of finishing granite and will conclude with a discussion of power sources, toolmaking, patents, granite workers, labor unions, and safety and health issues. The four articles will appear in consecutive issues of The Chronicle. Granite is a very common stone found world-wide. Granite has been commercially quarried in the United States, Canada, Scotland, Finland, Italy, Ukraine, India, China, and Africa. Granite is found throughout the United States and has been commercially exploited in every New England state (Figure 1). Granite is composed primarily of quartz and feldspar with smaller amounts of mica. Quartz contributes to granites strength, hardness, and luster, and acts as a cement binding all the elements together. Feldspar, granites principal ingredient, occurs in a number of forms, mostly sodium/aluminum/silicon-rich plagioclase and potassium-rich microcline. In addition to contributing to strength and hardness, feldspar primarily determines granites color, resistance to discoloration and decay, and ability to receive a polish. Mica (mostly white muscovite and black biotite) is present in much smaller amounts. The relative amounts of white and black mica are an important factor in both the color and commercial value of the granite. If white mica predominates, the granite will be light-colored, and if the black predominates, the granite will be dark, often approaching black. If the white and black occur in roughly equal amounts, the granite will be speckled. Since mica does not polish well nor does it retain its luster, excessive amounts of mica decrease the commercial value of granite. As an example, granite of the Barre, Vermont, area contains 31.7 percent plagioclase feldspar, 26.4 percent microcline feldspar, 23.3 percent quartz, 6.4 percent muscovite mica, 4.5 percent biotite mica, 2.7 percent orthoclase, 2.1 percent chlorite, and 1.6 percent calcite.

Dental Implants Ordinary dentures, generally made of plastic, are custom-fitted to match and adhere to the upper or lower jaw or made to clamp on to remaining teeth with metal supports or bridges. But today there are dental implants, which add a method of attaching the denture with metal anchors directly and permanently to the jaw bone with no need to ever be removed by the wearer.
Endosseous dental implants are becoming a common treatment option in the practice of dentistry and have shown great promise for being able to restore dental function and esthetics. Spontaneous exposure of endosseous dental implants is a complication that can be indicative of later implant failure, but few definitive studies have been conducted concerning this histological phenomenon. In this study, literature review of relevant clinical and laboratory studies, along with clinical observations, were conducted to determine the histopathological factors associated with the spontaneous exposure, and subsequent failure, of endosseous dental implant systems during phase I (implant phase) of treatment. Fifteen peer-reviewed studies (1997-2001) of endosseous dental implant complications and failure, published over a five-year period, were reviewed. Clinical observations (N=95) of maxillary and mandibular (edentulous and partial dentition) surgical placement of single-unit, endosseous dental implants were conducted over a three-month period, to gain further knowledge of treatment procedures. All patients were in good health, and no control group was used. The studies were initially categorized by ascending chronology to evaluate the development of a definitive etiology. The studies were then classified as comprehensive or specialized, and evaluated. Initial results indicated that several factors involving the technique-sensitive surgical procedure contribute to the primary, soft tissue, inflammation response of spontaneous dental implant exposure. It was also noted that no definitive, uniform protocol exists for diagnosing this complication. T. If you are missing one or more teeth and would like to restore your ability to smile, speak and eat with comfort and confidence, then dental implants may be right for you. Dental implants are artificial substitutes for natural tooth roots. The implants-small anchors shaped like screws, cylinders or blades-are placed into the jawbone. Replacement teeth are attached to the part of the implant that projects through the gums.

Dental implantsDental implants are surgically fixed substitutes for roots of missing teeth. Embedded in the jawbone, they act as anchors for a replacement tooth, also known as a crown, or a full set of replacement teeth. The purpose of dental implant surgery is to fix metallic anchors in the jaw bone so that they can receive the replacement teeth and hold them in place. Dental implants should be considered as an option for replacing failing or missing teeth and often provide more predictable results than bridgework, resin bonded bridges, or endodontic treatment.

Ask Ann Knight to explain the steady rise in popularity of bamboo flooring in the U.S. market and she likely quote her companys tagline: Beautiful, durable and renewable bamboo. Teragren, formerly TimberGrass LLC, has been a prominent player in the importation of bamboo flooring and related products for the past decade. Knights husband, David, is president/CEO of the Bainbridge Island, WA-based company. Teragren brought quality and consistency standards to the very new bamboo flooring market in 1994 when it introduced its first flooring brand, TimberGrass, Ann Knight says. We were the pioneers of the industry in 94. We were looking for an alternative to wood fiber, found the factory in China and cemented the relationship that endures today. We changed our name in 2003 because the other name was closely associated with bamboo flooring and we want to go into sustainably harvested hardwoods, too.
Teragren Literature that describes Teragrens bamboo flooring, stair parts, panels and veneers is available. The products are made from moso, a bamboo species.

While a host of technologies will be competing for the broadband access market over the next several years, a wireless medium satellite service stands to gain a significant share. Our forecasts indicate each technology will face significant competition from broadband satellites after 2002, when global [low earth orbit] constellations are in orbit and current [direct-to-home] providers have launched their own Ka-band satellites for a mix of narrowcast digital video services and broadband access services, reports Scott Clavenna, senior analyst at Pioneer.Cable modems will lead the market in terms of total subscribers throughout the forecast period, but satellites are predicted to gain a larger revenue stream because of their ability to address residential and business customers equally well.

The strategic planning committee took a good hard listen to the commercial real estate members on the panel who had been under the tent before, when it was smaller, and who didnt really feel their voice was being heard. It also heard the views of some smaller mortgage banking firms on the committee about ways in which they might be able to build a better tent.We interviewed Jim Nelson, chief executive officer, Eberhardt Company, Minneapolis, a past MBA president and a committee member from the commercial side of the business. How did he see the strategic plan improving the representation his segment of the business would get in the new MBA? Nelson said just having a separate commercial/multifamily governance structure was a positive change to come out of the strategic plan. He said that would ensure a focus on commercial real estate finance/multifamily issues, which he underscores are different from single family residential issues. How will the strategic plan create a better MBA for the entire real estate finance industry? Nelson says it will do so by making the association more inclusive and more representative of all elements of the industry - giving greater weight to the associations views.

The best promotional prospects for back-to-school in most discount store health and beauty aid departments are vitamins, acne preparations and popular-priced cosmetics, said chain buyers polled by DSN. While some retailers–like Zayre, Hills and Jamesway–promote these products in BTS circulars, all merchants surveyed will try to cash in on the seasons influx of school-age customers with special in-store promotions. Last fall, when Zayre didnt advertise skin-care items at all, but simply “went after the business with increased inventory,” according to an official, sales jumped 20%–equaling the overall department gain.
“The merger between the medicine and beauty worlds began when beauty treatments stopped relying solely on products,” says Stephen Kee of the Saks range of hair and beauty salons. “Instead, they began to integrate medical procedures, like laser work. As this happened, customers started to see the therapist in a more serious light. In turn, therapists began to train in techniques that were once the preserve of the surgery, such as red vein removal, or bring doctors and nurses into the salon to carry out these and other treatments, such as collagen or Botox injections, on their behalf.” This cross-pollination of industries works both ways. Tomorrow sees the launch of Vitace, the first widely available own-brand range from a British dermatologist, in this case Dr Patrick Bowler, a Botox specialist. In the States, it is already commonplace to use products developed by your dermatologist. There is even a factory hidden in the bowels of the Midwest that produces generic skincare products on to which dermatologists can stick their own labels so patients think they have done their time in the laboratory. On the other side of the fence, both the Prada and Manifesto skincare ranges are examples of a new trend in the cosmetics industry for medically inspired labelling and packaging. Increasingly, spas and salons offer a range of orthodox medical tests and even treatments alongside the traditional menu of wraps and facials. Saks, for example, offers physiotherapy (pounds 45 per hour) and food intolerance testing (pounds 250), and will soon launch hormonal testing. At Champneys, the renowned health spa, you can book a mammogram (price on application), a cervical smear (from pounds 70 with a breast examination) and ECG heart testing (pounds 60) as additional treatments during your stay. Luxury health spas Henlow Grange, Springs and Forest Mere are set to follow suit with their own on-site wellwoman programmes. Even Boots is launching instore salons that offer pampering treats alongside medical treatments such as osteopathy, physiotherapy and even counselling.
Julio F. Gallo, M.D., FACS, co-founder, The MIAMI Institute for Age Management Intervention, says, We are heartened by the outpouring of interest in our new medical spa. Beautiful Forevers research and business development counseling was pivotal to our launch, and no doubt to the huge success we are already experiencing after just opening our doors last month. Adds Dr. Gallo, Cheryl has an amazing ability to combine business knowledge, marketing expertise and operational know-how with other aspects of medical and aesthetic treatments. She seems to know what will be hot before it is. She has been an invaluable asset in setting up the aesthetic treatments and office structure of our new comprehensive medical spa and cosmetic surgery center. Cheryl Whitman, CEO, Beautiful Forever, says, The medical spa business is an exciting trend, quickly gaining traction across the country. Consumers want more than they can get at the traditional day spa. They want a one-stop beauty destination where they can receive pampering as well as some on trend cosmetic and aesthetic procedures.

Overheard at the Reform Club dining room the other day, as a lady diner was ordering her pudding: Diner: Please can you bring coffee with my pudding. W: Im afraid coffee is only served and drunk in the lounge.
Coffee futures moved back above $1 in July, up from lows of 95 cents in mid-June. Prices likely will fluctuate because of the Brazilian weather for the next two months. There have been 17 freeze events in Brazil over the past 42 years, but only three in the past 21 years. Odds are we could see a significant price spike over the next six weeks. Traditionally, speculators bid up coffee prices ahead of the Brazilian winter, which runs from June through August. Then, if no frost damage occurs, prices tend to collapse by late August. John T. The smallest number of domestic vacationers (8 percent) travel between 500 and 599 miles. Since 84 percent of all vacation trips utilize a car, truck, or recreational vehicle, and 54 percent of all family trips include kids, its easy to see why 599 miles isnt a terribly popular travel distance, falling just after Im so bored I could scream and a little before I want to go home. According to the TIAs forecast, 63 percent of Americans intended to do some vacation travelling this summer, a number that has remained fairly stable during the past six years - as has the number of people for whom vacation travel means trips to the bathroom - 14 percent of those polled by the TIA predicted they would be spending their vacation time going nowhere in the summer of 1999. The reason? Money, for one.

Hypnotherapy explained.
HypnotherapyHypnotherapy is a combination of hypnosis and therapeutic intervention . The therapist leads the patient to positive change while the patient is deeply relaxed in a state of heightened suggestibility called trance.
Abstract This paper argues that hypnotherapy is a potentially effective adjunct to complementary medicine. Using existing research and professional publications, the paper considers the impact hypnosis could make as an adjunct to complementary medicine. Just as hypnosis is effective within the orthodox health arena, it could have application in complementary medicine. Cowen LW, Saltmarsh D, Hayek R. Hypnotherapy: an adjunct to complementary medicine. Journal of the Australian Traditional-Medicine Society 2008;14(2):87-89.

OAKLAND — Firefighters with Oakland Fire Station 23 pulled up to a home on Sunkist Drive and immediately made a checklist of what was wrong with the property around the dilapidated white house. Weeds on the land near the road were knee high, dry and brown. The red brick chimney on the roof did not have a spark arrestor. A pile of dead and rotting vegetation was laying against a wall and there was no address number in sight. Firefighters from every station in the hills are going from house to house this month inspecting property for fire safety. They want homeowners to maintain a “defensible” space around their homes, a 30- to 100-foot space clear from overgrown grasses, weeds and tree limbs. Fire consumes this sort of vegetation first, then spreads to larger trees and homes.
As part of a project to educate homeowners on making their homes more energy-efficient, one Oklahoma City couple volunteered their house for a thorough inspection Wednesday to determine how much energy it was wasting and what they can do about it. Sustainable OKC, the local branch of the Oklahoma Sustainability Network, and Guaranteed Watt Saver worked out an arrangement where GWS will inspect four houses for free and present their findings at the groups sustainability conference in April. After about an hour-long inspection, Parker and Curtis Maxwell, GWSs Oklahoma operational manager, determined the 1,517-square- foot home wasnt in that bad of shape when it came to energy loss.

HypnotherapyHypnotherapy is a combination of hypnosis and therapeutic intervention . The therapist leads the patient to positive change while the patient is deeply relaxed in a state of heightened suggestibility called trance.
Morgan D. (1996). The principles of hypnotherapy. Bradford UK: Eilidon Press. The book is divided into three parts. Part A consisting of 9 chapters covers foundational material on systems theory and how that can be applied to organic systems and to hypnosis. It discusses positive feedback loops that amplify the process and negative feedback loops that subdue the process. Positive feedback amplification can be either beneficial or harmful depending on whether increasing the effect is desired, while negative feedback calming can be either beneficial or harmful depending on whether decreasing the effect is desired. Morgan focuses on the activity of a system, the activity of its component subsystems, or the activity of the supersystem of which the system is a component. His main theoretical focus is on whether the activity of the system is increasing, decreasing, or staying the same, as other components change in specified ways. Hypnosis is described in systems terms, not as a “state,” but rather in terms of what system or subsystem components are changed, either increased or decreased, during trance induction, deepening, maintenance, trance work, and termination. He uses simple symbols to represent activities in quasi-mathematical style, which is helpful. Some of the letter symbols are used for different activities in different parts of the book. It would have been easier to follow if given letter symbols had been used more consistently to represent single specific activities. Some of his textual references to others publications are found in the bibliography at the end of the book, but some are unfortunately not present in the bibliography. He goes through common hypnotic tests in Chapter 8 and inductions in Chapter 9 explaining them in systems terms. This does produce some greater conceptual clarity with respect to subsystem component activities during hypnosis. Part B consisting of 6 chapters is the central discussion on what the systems approach can teach us about hypnotherapy. Chapter 10 discusses the matter of diagnosis in systems terms looking at precursors, problems, and resultants, and how they change with respect to one another. Chapter 11 focuses on positive and negative feedback loops in organic systems including behavioral, emotive, and cognitive. The vicious circle is a positive feedback loop with harmful consequences. Thinking in systems terms may make needed changes clearer to the therapist. Chapter 12 looks at the consequences of symptom reduction. The remaining three chapters in this part examine making changes by choosing the appropriate positive feedback loops to amplify desired effects and the appropriate negative feedback loops to quiet undesired effects, planning the changes, and reinforcing the changes by selecting natural reinforces.
